Sunday Reflection (April 20, 2025)

Easter Sunday Reflection upon Isaiah 25:6-9 / Luke 24:1-12 / 1 Corinthians 15

Paul exhorts us to live a compassionate life based not on fear and judgment but on the hope of resurrection. Living in such a manner can empower the world with a glimpse of the quality of resurrection life. Jesus’s teaching and life displayed what’s ultimately coming down the pike that counters our notions of power and boundaries of exclusion. Although he had all the power in the world, he didn’t oppress anyone. Although he could have kept to himself, he went outside his boundaries to share God’s love. He refused to return evil for evil, hatred for hatred, and punch for punch, a different way of life because of the resurrection of Jesus. As Christians, we can embody this hope by loving even our enemies, sharing grace and kindness, and practicing forgiveness and reconciliation in our relationships.

Despite our proclamation of the resurrection, Christians have not always lived lives that reflect the quality of life in the resurrection. We have often disregarded the societal structures that perpetuate injustice, and we have shown little compassion for the struggles of poor immigrants. Our judgment has been clouded by prejudice, leading to the mistreatment of others on personal and social levels. Does the resurrection of Jesus genuinely influence how you live your life? Or do you harbor the same hatred, fears, and prejudices as those who do not know God? However, empowered by the Holy Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead, let us show the world a glimpse of God’s inviting, forgiving, and compassionate love by challenging injustice wherever we find it.

Prayer for the Week (April 20-April 26, 2025)

Let us pray to our God of mercy who fills our lives with love and joy: God, we no longer look for Jesus among the dead, for he is alive and has become the Lord of life.  From the waters of death, you raise us with him and renew your gift of life within us. Increase in our minds and hearts the risen life we share with Christ. May we grow as your people toward the fullness of eternal life with you, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Sunday Sermon April 20, 2025

Prayer for the Week (April 13-April 19, 2025)

Let us pray that we follow Jesus on his road of service: God our Father, in Jesus your Son, you have shown us that the road that leads to victory is the way of loving service and willingness to pay the price of sacrifice for faithful, unswerving love.  Give us the mentality and attitude of Jesus, so we learn to serve with him.  May we thus become victorious with him who eternally dwells with you and the Holy Spirit, One God, now and forever. Amen

Sunday Reflection (April 6, 2025)

Sunday Reflection upon Philippians 3:4-14
We share in the sufferings of Christ not by enduring pain in a harmful relationship but by making the noble choice to suffer while striving to do good, just as Christ did. Soren Kierkegaard beautifully expressed this, ‘We suffer in likeness with Christ when we endure ill-treatment from others because we seek and pursue the good.’ How often have we not suffered because we chose not to do the good and right thing by loving God and others, including our enemies? Our choices to do good or not to do good are crucial in understanding and sharing in Christ’s sufferings, empowering us to participate actively in acts of mercy and justice.
We share in Christ’s sufferings when we show mercy to those caught in sin, when we extend forgiveness to our enemies, when we stand up for the poor and dispossessed with unwavering determination, when we offer our friendship to those in need, when we fight for justice for the wrongly convicted, when we choose honesty over deceit, and when we resist the temptation to act out of anger or malice, we are sharing in the sufferings of Christ. May we, within our abilities, share in the sufferings of Christ, being faithful to God and others, including our enemies. As a response to God’s grace, may the concept of sharing in the sufferings of Christ be our way of life, empowering us to stand for justice and righteousness.

Prayer for the Week (April 6-April 12, 2025)

Let us ask our Father that we imitate his mercy: God of life, Jesus, your Son reveals to us that love is stronger than death, and you wish the sinner to live and to become new. May we no longer live in the past of sin but make us free for life and love. Give us hearts as merciful to one another as you have been lenient and loving to us. Amen.
