Kid Junction Report for September 2018

Our 2018 Book bag Campaign was definitely a success!!! We collected 59 backpacks and the largest amount of school supplies we have ever collected. Thank you, church family, for your generosity in helping us reach our goal. Not only were we able to serve children on our normal assistance day, we were also able to donate 10 book bags and school materials to God’s Storehouse. These were distributed at two different apartment complexes in the city. We have enough school materials left over to serve children for the upcoming months. A special thanks to Judy Farmer and Elaine Schaeffer for joining us on August 6 to help with the over flow!

KID JUNCTION NEWS FOR 2017

As 2017 comes to a close, the Kid Junction team is happy to report another successful year. In our continuing mission to serve the community, we have served 68 families and 150 children. This was possible because of the support and generosity of our FUMC family. We thank you—each and every one—for your support and prayers as we continue this ministry. Also a very special thanks to our volunteers for the year: Betty Parks, Irene Turner, Janis Kurtz, Nancy Westmoreland, and Doris Ward.

Our 2017 backpack campaign brought in 46 backpacks and a large amount of school supplies. One or two backpacks are left and a small volume of school supplies, which are always needed during the school year.

We received about 10 coats for the 2017 coat campaign. Most of these were distributed during November and December, leaving only a few small sizes for the rest of this winter. When the children’s coats go on clearance, we will be able to restock. If anyone would like to make a monetary contribution for the 2018 children’s coat campaign, please note when turning into the church office. If you would like to donate a coat or coats we need sizes from 4-14 for both boys and girls.

Again this year the Prayer Shawl Ministry has contributed blankets, hats and scarves. Also, Janis Kurtz, one of our volunteers, keeps a supply of pocket prayer shawls available to distribute to the families we serve. Our team truly values the contribution these ladies have made with love and prayers for those who receive them.

As the numbers show, the needs in our community are there. The families that receive assistance are grateful and appreciative. When children are able to come with parents, many leave with smiles on their faces after receiving items such as hygiene items, school supplies, new coats, shoes, outfits, socks, underwear, pajamas, sweaters, story books, toys and/or stuffed animals.
All of us at Kid Junction feel just as blessed as the families we serve. We are proud to be a part of our church family, who has such a great heart for children.
If you have questions about KJ or would like to volunteer your time or talent, please contact any member of the KJ Team: Linda Murphy at 233-9102, Elsie Davis, or Dianne Marshall at 233-7841. We ARE in need of volunteers. If you would be willing to help change out clothes from one season to the next or come and assist on one of the Mondays, occasionally, we could use you!!!

2017 KID JUNCTION BOOK BAG CAMPAIGN

The Kids Junction Team is launching our fifth Back-to-School book bag campaign for children in grades K-4.  Last year’s campaign was a huge success!!!  We collected 59 book bags and a tremendous amount of school materials. Once again we are challenging our church family to meet or exceed that number this year.

We have found that several families have come to depend on Kids Junction as a resource for their family, even though each family is allowed only one visit every six months. From January-June this year we have served 36 families and 68 children.

You may choose to bring empty book bags, and/or any amount of school materials you wish.  There is a list of most needed supplies at the end of this letter and extra copies will be on the table in the annex. You may begin bringing in any of these items and placing them in boxes at the doors.  If you make a monetary contribution please designate it for Book Bag Campaign.

Children in some of the Galax area will be returning to school in early August.  We would like to have as many book bags as possible and a large supply of school materials by the third Monday in July (July 17). Keep in mind these are items that are used all year long.  Sunday school classes or other groups may want to take this on as a project.

You may place any items brought on kneeling part of rail in Annex.

The Kids Junction Team would like to thank you very much for your continued support for this mission. Children are so proud of new book bags and materials.  Our team is truly grateful for your generosity in helping to make less fortunate children feel prepared as they begin a new school year.

Blessings to each of you,

Linda Murphy, Elsie Davis, and Dianne Marshall

Our news from the Kid Junction team this month is: We finally got all the winter clothes packed away and most of the spring and summer clothes out! We are now ready for an active season filled with recipients preparing for the spring and summer months.

Again we thank you for all your contributions—monetary, tangible items, and time. Because of them, we are able to stock our rooms with items of necessity for children less fortunate. We are thankful and proud to be a part of this church family who contributes so freely to this very important mission.

2016 KID JUNCTION NEWS

As another year comes to a close, once again the Kid Junction team is happy to report a very successful year. In our continuing search to serve the community better, we have made several improvements in our KJ outreach mission:

  • We have moved to a larger room, making it more comfortable for volunteers and the people we serve.
  • We have expanded the supplies we offer, which includes more shoes and a larger variety of items.
  • As our numbers continue to rise, we are considering lengthening the hours on the first and third Tuesday we are open.

In the past year we have served 133 families and 285 children. All this is possible only because of the support and generosity of our FUMC family. We thank you—each and every one—for your support and prayers and as we continue this ministry.

Our 2016 backpack campaign brought in 59 backpacks and a wealth of school supplies.

All the backpacks have been distributed and we continue to re-stock our shelves with the remaining school supplies.

We received 17 coats as well as a large amount of money for our winter coat
campaign, which has allowed us to outfit many children with new coats for the cold winter months. To compliment the coat campaign we would like to thank the knitting and crocheting ministry for supplying us with scarves, hats, and blankets.

As the numbers show, the needs in our community are there. The families that
receive this help are very grateful, as the smiles of the children testify as they leave with school supplies, new coats, shoes, and outfits which include socks, underwear, pajamas, and sweaters. Many also leave with story books, toys and/or stuffed animals.

All of us at Kid Junction feel just as blessed as the families we serve. We are proud to be part of our church family who has such a great heart for children.
If you have questions about KJ or would like to volunteer your time or talent, please contact any member of the KJ Team.

We would also like to recognize and thank our assistants for 2016:
